Short version: open Material POS, tap Settings in the left menu, and tap Download next to "Download latest update". The App Store opens on the Material POS page. Tap Update, wait for it to finish, then reopen Material POS.
Why keep the app up to date
We release new versions of the Material POS iPad app regularly. Updates include fixes for payment terminals, printers, and syncing, along with new features. When you contact support about a problem, the first thing we will usually ask is whether you are on the latest version, so it is worth updating before you reach out.
Updating does not sign you out and does not change any of your settings. Your organization, register, printer, and terminal settings all stay in place.
Update when you are between customers. The App Store closes the app while it installs the new version, which takes a minute or two. Any sale that has already been completed is safe, but do not start the update in the middle of ringing someone up.
How to tell an update is available
Material POS checks the App Store for a newer version every time you open the app or bring it back to the front. When one is available, you will see:
- A red badge on Settings in the left menu, with the words Update available underneath it.
- At the top of Settings, a line showing your current App Version and a row that says Download latest update with a Download button.
If you do not see the badge, you are already on the latest version, or the App Store has not yet published the new release to your region. The App Store can take a few hours to show a new version everywhere, so if we have told you a version was released today and you do not see it yet, check again a little later.
Option 1: Update from inside the app
- Open Material POS on your iPad.
- Tap Settings in the left menu. It will have a red badge on it when an update is available.
- On the General tab at the top of the settings list, tap the Download button next to Download latest update.
- The App Store opens to the Material POS page. Tap Update.
- Wait for the progress circle to finish. The button changes to Open when the update is installed.
- Tap Open, or go back to your home screen and open Material POS as usual.
Option 2: Update through the App Store
Use this if you do not see the badge in the app, or if the app will not open.
- Open the App Store on your iPad.
- Tap the search icon at the bottom and search for Material POS.
- Find the purple app icon with white writing that says POS.
- If you see an Update button, tap it. If you see Open instead, you are already on the latest version.
- Wait for the update to finish, then open Material POS.
You can also see every app waiting for an update in one place: open the App Store, tap your profile picture in the top right, and scroll down to Available Updates. Tap Update next to Material POS, or Update All.
How to check which version you are on
- Open Material POS and tap Settings in the left menu.
- Tap the About tab.
- Scroll to Application Information. The App Version row shows your version number, 1, followed by a build number in parentheses.
If support asks for your app version, this is the number to send.
Turn on automatic updates
You can have your iPad install Material POS updates on its own, usually overnight while the iPad is charging and on Wi-Fi.
- Open the iPad's Settings app (the gray gear icon on the home screen, not the settings inside Material POS).
- Tap App Store.
- Under Automatic Downloads, turn on App Updates.
Automatic updates are a good safety net, but they are not instant. If we tell you a fix has been released, update by hand using one of the options above rather than waiting for the automatic update.
Troubleshooting
The Update button is grayed out or the download never finishes
- Make sure the iPad is connected to Wi-Fi. Open the iPad's Settings app, tap Wi-Fi, and confirm you are connected to the correct network.
- Check the iPad has free storage. Open the iPad's Settings app, tap General, then iPad Storage. If it is nearly full, delete unused apps or photos and try again.
- Restart the iPad. Hold the top button until the power slider appears, slide to turn off, wait ten seconds, then turn it back on.
The App Store asks for an Apple ID password
The App Store sometimes asks you to sign in before installing an update. Use the Apple ID that was used to install Material POS on this iPad. If nobody at the store knows that Apple ID, contact your store owner or whoever set up the iPad. Material support cannot recover Apple ID passwords.
The App Store says the update requires a newer version of iPadOS
Material POS requires iPadOS 16.4 or newer. To update the iPad itself, open the iPad's Settings app, tap General, then Software Update, and install any available update. Older iPads that cannot run iPadOS 16.4 cannot run the current version of Material POS. See Supported Hardware for the iPad models we support.
I updated but still see the badge in the app
Fully close and reopen Material POS. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause to show your open apps, swipe up on Material POS to close it, then open it again. The app rechecks the App Store each time it opens.
I have more than one iPad
Each iPad updates on its own. Repeat the steps above on every register.
