Start with Printing Barcode Labels for how printing works and the checks that fix most problems. This guide covers what is specific to DYMO.
What you need
- A DYMO LabelWriter 450 or 550 series printer connected by USB to a Mac or Windows computer.
- The latest DYMO Connect for Desktop from dymo.com. This installs the printer driver. The CD in the box is out of date, and the 550 series will not work with the older DYMO Label software.
- DYMO-branded labels. The LabelWriter 550 reads a mark on the back of each DYMO label and will not print on other brands. The 450 accepts other brands, but they often skip, jam, or print blank because the sensor cannot find the gap between labels.
Setting up the printer
- Install DYMO Connect for Desktop with the printer unplugged.
- Restart the computer, then plug the printer in and turn it on.
- Open Google Chrome. If Chrome was already open, quit it and open it again so it sees the printer.
- In Material, open Print labels, choose your label under Printer and label type, and press Print labels.
- In the Chrome print window choose your DYMO as the destination, click More settings, and choose the matching Paper size. Chrome remembers this for next time.
DYMO label sizes Material can print
Depending on which DYMO driver is installed, the print window lists sizes either by DYMO part number (for example "30252 Address") or by dimensions (for example "3 x 1.25 in"). Either one is fine as long as it matches your roll.
Template in Material | Label size | Name in the print window |
DYMO 30336 medium | 1" x 2 1/8" | 30336 or w72h154 |
DYMO 30347 small | 1" x 1 1/2" | 30347 |
DYMO 30332 square | 1" x 1" | 30332, 11353 Multi-Purpose, or w72h72 |
DYMO 30373 price tag | 7/8" x 15/16" rat-tail | 30373 Price Tag Label or w71h144 |
DYMO 30299 jewelry | 3/8" x 3/4" barbell, 2 across | 30299 Price Tag (2-up) or w153h63 |
DYMO 30252 Address | 1 1/8" x 3 1/2" | 30252 Address or 3 x 1.25 in |
The starter roll that comes in the DYMO box is usually not one of these sizes.
If your label size is missing from the Paper size list, the DYMO driver is out of date. Install the latest DYMO Connect for Desktop and restart the computer.
Loading labels
- Slide the roll onto the spool with no gap between the roll and the spool sides.
- Place the spool as far left in the lid as it goes.
- Feed the labels into the slot from the bottom of the roll, print side up, and slide the label guide against them.
- Press the feed button once so the first label advances. Close the lid and wait for a solid blue light.
A label is jammed, did not load, or will not back out
- Tear off any labels that have already fed through the slot.
- Press the form feed button on the front of the printer to push the stuck label through. On the LabelWriter 550, the second button is reverse feed and backs the labels out. On the 450, the reverse feed button is inside the lid.
- If it still will not move, pull the label release lever inside the lid toward you and gently pull the labels out.
- Reload the roll using the steps above.
The printer acts like it printed, but the label is blank
- The roll is in upside down. Labels must feed from the bottom of the roll with the printable side facing up.
- You are using non-DYMO labels. The 550 will not print on them at all.
- The sensor is dirty. Take the roll out, run the cleaning card that came with the printer through the label slot, and reload.
The printer skips labels or prints across two labels
- Check you are on DYMO-branded labels.
- Clean the sensor with the cleaning card.
- Check the paper size in the print window matches the roll.
Barcodes are bold and bleed together
Lower the print density. On Windows, open Devices and Printers, right-click the DYMO, choose Printing preferences, then Advanced, and set Print Density to Light. On a Mac, ask us and we will walk you through it.
The DYMO does not appear in the print window, or the light is off or flashing
- Light off: reseat the power adapter at the printer and at the wall, and try another outlet. On the 550, press the power button.
- Light flashing blue: the roll is empty or loaded incorrectly. Reload it.
- Dim blue: the printer is asleep. Send a print and it wakes up.
- Solid blue but not listed, or shows as an unknown USB device: install the latest DYMO Connect for Desktop, restart the computer, then add the printer. On a Mac go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners and click Add Printer. On Windows go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and click Add device. Try a different USB cable and port before assuming the printer is faulty.
- Newer MacBook with only USB-C ports: you need a USB-A to USB-C adapter for the printer's cable.
- Listed but nothing prints: open the printer's queue in those same settings and press Resume if it says Paused. Clear any stuck jobs and print again.
